Dr Clare Bankhead

Clare joined the unit in 1996.  Prior to moving to Oxford, she worked at the ARC Epidemiology Research Unit at the University of Manchester, where she obtained an MSc in Epidemiology and Medical Sciences.  Her MSc project involved analysing a large sample of data from the NOAR (Norwich Arthritis Register) Study.  Clare was awarded a DPhil (Clinical Medicine) from the University of Oxford in 2006.  A mixed methods approach was used in her thesis to identify potentially significant diagnostic factors that may be associated with ovarian cancer.

Previously, Clare has worked in the fields of breast and cervical cancer screening.  In particular, this has included coordination and analysis of two MRC funded randomised controlled trials to increase uptake of screening in areas with low participation in breast screening,  and contribution to a large multi-centre cohort study investigating the psychological impact of mammographic screening in women with a family history of breast cancer (PIMMS Study).  Clare has helped develop and produce two systematic reviews designed to provide evidence-based guidance on the content of the leaflets and letters sent to women as part of the NHS Breast and Cervical Screening Programmes and has conducted focus groups exploring UK women’s information-related experiences and needs during the cervical screening process (including HPV).  Recently, she has been involved in the Unit’s work on screening for bowel cancer and is contributing to a CRUK funded study exploring public awareness of cancer.

Clare was a statistics tutor from 1997-2007 on the Oxford University Evidence Based Health Care MSc course.  She is a steering group member of the PIMMS, PsyFOCS and Caper-O studies and has joined the NCRI Primary Care Clinical Studies Development Group.
