Biography
I am a General Practitioner and Senior Clinical Research Fellow at the Department of Primary Health Care, University of Oxford. I graduated from the University of Cambridge with triple First Class Honours in 2001 (pre-clinical medicine) and from the University of Oxford Medical School in 2004 (clinical medicine). I trained as a General Practitioner in London. From 2008-9 I was an Honorary Research Fellow at King’s College London School of Medicine where I developed an interest in antibiotic prescribing in primary care.
I returned to Oxford after being awarded a National Institute for Health Research Doctoral Research Fellowship in 2009. At the moment, my main areas of research interest are respiratory tract infections and persistent cough in primary care. Around 1 in 4 people who develop an acute respiratory tract infection continue coughing for 2 weeks or longer. This may occur if an acute infection becomes persistent or a secondary infection develops.
I am currently involved in conducting two studies looking at patients who see their General Practitioner because of a persistent cough:
1. CAPS – an observational study examining the prevalence of whooping cough and Mycoplasma pneumoniae in children with persistent cough.
2. MAC – a double blind randomised placebo controlled trial of montelukast in adults with persistent cough in primary care.
