Biography
Richard McManus is Professor of Primary Care Research at the University of Oxford and a part time GP at Greenridge Surgery in Billesley, Birmingham. His research interests lie mainly in cardiovascular disease and he has published work on the management of chest pain in primary care, blood pressure measurement, stroke management in primary care and self monitoring in hypertension. He holds an NIHR Career Development Fellowship and leads the Stroke Theme of the Birmingham CLAHRC as well as an NIHR Programme Grant around Self Monitoring in Hypertension and several other NIHR funded studies on the primary care management of hypertension and chronic kidney disease. He supervises PhD students undertaking projects in diabetes, hypertension and chronic kidney disease and is external examiner for the Primary Care MSc at Barts and the London. He chairs the Blood Pressure Monitoring Working Party of the British Hypertension Society and the SRN Primary Care Clinical Studies Group. He is Guardian of the RCGP Cardiovascular Curriculum and provides expert advice to NICE (member of recent Hypertension Guideline Development Group), Department of Health and the European Society of Cardiology.
