Quality and Safety in Primary Care

Our research on quality and safety in Primary Care focuses on the development, implementation and monitoring of health care interventions for the development of efficient and safe health care delivery systems.

We are participating in the development, testing and implementing the NSPCR Patient Safety Toolkit in general practices in England in a collaborative project of the School of Primary Care Research led by the University of Nottingham.

We are conducting research on exception reporting in the Quality and Outcomes Framework, with a particular focus on the implications for patients with multi-morbidity. We are conducting this work in collaboration with researchers at the University of Manchester. We are also developing a programme of research on the impact of multi-morbidity on quality and safety of primary care using routinely collected clinical data in collaboration with other Departments within the NIHR School.

We are participating in Linneaus Euro-PC, a co-ordination action funded by the European Union Framework 7 programme that seeks to address the deficit in activity related to patient safety in primary care and the primary care/secondary care interface in the European Union. The group is contributing to the development of a taxonomy of patient safety events and the development of consensus guidelines on indicator based measurement and monitoring of patient safety in primary care in Europe.

We have recently contributed to the development of consensus guidelines for safety netting in cancer diagnosis in Primary Care in work funded by the Department of Health and led by the MaDOx team.
