The South Africa Link
In early 2005 we established a link with the Primary Health Care Directorate at the University of Cape Town, headed by Professor Jimmy Volmink. Pat Yudkin worked in Cape Town with Professor Volmink and colleagues to set up a collaborative study in a politically sensitive area relating to HIV/AIDS: the presumed under-reporting of deaths from HIV/AIDS in South African mortality statistics. Death certificates relating to a cohort of deaths in a geographically-defined urban population are being compared with the putative cause of death derived from medical records. A second joint study is being developed as the DPhil project of Dr Ishaaq Datay, a Rhodes scholar from the University of Cape Town, who will be jointly supervised by members of our two departments. This project will focus on social and cultural factors related to virological failure in patients being treated for HIV/AIDS in Cape Town.
