Diabetes and Vascular Disease Group
The Diabetes and Vascular Disease Group has expertise in research into self-management and monitoring in long-term conditions.
The group has expertise in conducting trials and evaluating complex interventions to improve disease outcomes, with an ongoing programme of work in the areas of diabetes self-monitoring, medication adherence, epidemiology of familial hypercholesterolaemia and remote support for self management using e-health interventions.
The group benefits from strong collaborative links with other internationally recognised research groups in Oxford (the Diabetes Trials Unit, the Stroke Prevention Unit, and the University Department of Biomedical Engineering) as well as with the General Practice and Primary Care Research Unit at the University of Cambridge.
The Department of Primary Care has a strong track record in heart disease and stroke research and in recent years has conducted a number of high-profile multicentre trials of primary and secondary prevention (such as OXCHECK, ASSIST and PATCH). The Department of Primary Care also acts as the co-ordinating centre for The Simon Broome Register of familial hypercholesterolaemia, which has over 3,500 registered patients. This provides a platform for a major programme of research into the epidemiological, clinical, and genetic aspects of the disease with a wide range of collaborating centres.
Trials conducted by the Diabetes and Vascular Disease Group are supported by the Primary Care Clinical Trials Unit
